About the Author
Álamo Oliveira (1945–2025) was a prolific Azorean writer and a cultural advocate whose work deeply explored themes of identity, emigration, and the human condition. Born on Terceira Island, he published around 40 books—spanning poetry, novels, short stories, essays, and plays—and was translated into multiple languages, including English, French, Italian, Slovenian, Spanish, Japanese, and Croatian. His notable works include Já não gosto de chocolates, Até hoje (Memórias de Cão), and A Solidão da Casa do Regalo, for which he received prestigious awards such as the Almeida Garrett Prize (1999). In 2002, he was the first Portuguese writer-in-residence at UC Berkeley, and throughout his life, he was widely honored for his contributions to Lusophone culture.
About the Translator
Diniz Borges is the director of the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute at Fresno State University in California. Borges, originally from Praia da Vitória, Terceira, Azores, immigrated to the US as a child and has had a long teaching career, including at Tulare High School and Fresno State. He also serves as Portugal’s honorary consul in California. In addition to his academic leadership, Borges is the author of several books and has translated the works of Azorean writers into English.
