Portugal, considered one of the safest countries to live in, is ranked 7th most peaceful in the world according to the 2024 Global Peace Index (GPI) which assesses the peacefulness of countries based on societal safety, conflict, and militarization.
Indeed, according to GPI, Portugal has been among the top 10 safest most peaceful countries since 2015, when it achieved the 8th position ranking 2nd in 2017.
The main indicators are its low level of violent crime with a homicide rate of 0.9 per 100,000 people, its political stability, and a strong sense of community.
One of the most affordable destinations in Europe, Portugal is also a top destination for expats, known for its high quality of life and good weather.
According to the Global Peace Index (GPI), the 10 most peaceful countries in the world in 2041 are: (1) Iceland, the most peaceful country in the world for the 14th year in a row; (2) Ireland; (3) Austria; (4) New Zealand: (5) Singapore; (6) Switzerland; (7) Portugal; (8) Denmark; (9) Slovenia; and (10) Malaysia.
The United States ranked 132th in the index, while Yemen, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Congo, Russia, Syria, Israel, and Mali ranked the least peaceful. However, 84 countries saw an improvement in their peacefulness levels, while 79 countries faced a decline. Seven out of the top ten countries belong in the European region while the remaining three reside in the Asia-Pacific.
Launched in 2009, the Global Peace Index, is a comprehensive analysis of peacefulness based on 23 indicators, including militarization, societal safety, and conflict. It ranks 172 independent states and territories (99.7 percent of the world’s population) according to their levels of peacefulness, in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks.
