Travel: Portugal named Europe’s leading destination – WTA, Madeira

Portugal was voted, for the third consecutive year, as ‘Best European Destination’ for travelers and  39 awards additional awards, at the 26th World Travel Awards (WTA), known as the ‘World Tourism Oscars.’

The World Travel Awards Europe gala ceremony 2019 was held on Saturday night at Belmond Reid’s Palace, on Madeira Island. Hundreds of the leading travel industries personalities, from across the continent, attended the event.

With Portugal, Madeira Island also received international recognition.as ‘Europe’s Leading Island Destination.’ Pestana Porto Santo All Inclusive Beach & Spa Resort, won (Europe’s Leading All-Inclusive Resort’ under the Hospitality category.

Other winners for Portugal include Turismo de Portugal (‘Europe’s Leading Tourist Board’) and The Algarve (‘Europe’s Leading Beach Destination’)

Paula Cabaço, Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Madeira, said: “We could not be happier with this distinction. Receiving this prize, at home, the first time we host the WTA Europe Gala Ceremony, has an even more special flavor. This is the result of the work we have carried out to bring Madeira to the European market. There is no doubt that we are the best island in Europe and with this campaign we leave the doors open for everyone to come and see and live Madeira!”

Other winners include the city of St. Petersburg, Russia, voted Europe’s Leading City Destination. Madrid named Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination, and Batumi, Georgia, with the title of Europe’s Leading Emerging Tourism Destination.

The World Travel Awards (WTA) is one of the most prestigious awards events of the travel industry, rewarding leaders in the tourism, airline, hotel and hospitality sectors around the world.

Graham E. Cooke, Founder, WTA, remarked: “Our inaugural ceremony in Madeira has proved an incredible success. We have had the privilege of recognizing the leading destinations, hotels, resorts, airlines and travel providers from across Europe and my congratulations to each of our winners.”

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards (WTA) distinguishes and rewards excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Winners are selected through an online poll involving consumers from the general public and thousands of professionals from the tourism and travel industry worldwide.
