Travel: Lisbon named “Europe’s Leading City Break Destination” – Portugal

For the third time in the last five years, Lisbon was voted Europe’s Leading City Break Destination by the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA).

Considered to be the world ‘Oscars’ of tourism destinations, the honor tops Madrid, London, Istanbul, Dublin, Paris, Rome and Venice. Lisbon had earned the same recognition in 2009 and 2010 over Dublin, Istanbul, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome and Venice.

The winners are determined by an online vote cast by hundreds of travel professionals and consumers around the world. The Wall Street Journal has heralded WTA as “the Oscar’s of the travel industry.”

Portugal was also recognized in the categories of Beach Destination, Island Destination and Leading Golf Destination. Besides Lisbon, WTA distinguished Portugal with  8 additional awards of 41 nominations:

-Europe’s Leading Beach Destination: The Algarve, Portugal

-Europe’s Leading Golf Destination: Portugal

-Europe’s Leading Island Destination: Madeira Islands

-Europe’s Leading Boutique Resort: Vila Joya, Portugal

-Europe’s Leading Design Hotel: The Vine Hotel, Portugal

-Europe’s Leading Golf Resort: Hotel Quinta do Lago, Portugal

-Europe’s Leading Luxury Resort: Conrad Algarve, Portugal

-Europe’s Leading Villa Resort: Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel, Portugal

The World Travel Awards were presented to Turismo de Lisboa at a gala in Antalya, Turkey, August 31, 2013.  An audience of the tourism industry’s elite, including senior executives of leading travel companies, government ministers and top tourism decision-makers, attended the event.

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards honors and rewards excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry offering one of the most prestigious and comprehensive awards program in travel and tourism, recognized worldwide as the hallmark of industry excellence.
