Travel: Azores Airlines inaugurates flight between Funchal and New York – Madeira

SATA Azores Airlines is inaugurating its first flight between Madeira (Funchal), and New York (FJK), starting November 29. The weekly non-stop operation, in partnership with Inovtravel, will be available until March 23, 2022.

A Portugal-based tour operator, Inovtravel is also providing travel packages to include accommodations, airport-hotel transfer and a travel expert.

“Our goal is to continue to provide a plethora of options to U.S. travelers looking to escape to Madeira’s stunning islands through new direct and convenient flight paths and a variety of travel packages that can be tailored to fit almost any budget,” said Inovtravel Founder and CEO Luis Nunes.

For to the President of the Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, this is a “unique opportunity” to boost North American tourism, affected by the COVID’19 pandemic, with hotel occupancy rates down to 62 %.

US passengers must complete a Madeira Safe online form within 48 hours prior to departure. Non fully vaccinated travelers must exhibit a negative COVID’19 PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival or conducting a free COVID’19 test upon arrival. If a passenger tests positive, complimentary lodging, meals, and medical support would be provided for the duration of the specified quarantine period.

SATA Azores Airlines operated from Boston to Funchal in 2005, 2006, 2016, and 2017, but its main routes to North America revolve around Ponta Delgada and Terceira in the Azores, to Boston and Toronto.

The airline has a long history of serving the United States and Canada from Ponta Delgada, in the Azores.
