Portugal’s life expectancy index rose to 79.2

Portugal’s life expectancy rate has risen to 79.2 years of age, one of the highest in the world, according to the Mortality Index for the years between 2008 and 2010, released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The figures show that women are now expected to live until age 82.05, compared to men expected to live until age 76.1.

Statistics for the previous three-year period (2006-2008) showed an average life expectancy for women at 81.7 years and 75.4 years for men, representing an overall average of 78.7 years.

In 2003,  a  14 European-nation study found that Portugal had the lowest life expectancy at birth for men (74.2), almost an average of 4 years less than the highest, Sweden ( 78.2).

Italy and France were the top two nations for life expectancy among women with 83.1 and 83.2 respectively.  In 2003 women’s life expectancy was lowest in Denmark at 80.1 and highest in France at 83.2.

Countries in the world with the highest life expectancy rates include Australia with 81,6 (men 79.3/women 84.1); Canada with  81,2 (men 78.7/women 83.9);  and France with 81 (men 77.8/women 84.3). The United States, with a life expectancy average of 78.1 (men 75.7/women 80.7) ranks below.
