International Conference: Acculturation and Integration of Portuguese Immigrants – RIC

The Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies, at Rhode Island College, is hosting a conference titled “Generations: Current Findings on the Acculturation and Integration of Portuguese Immigrants and their Descendants” to be held October 14 -15.

Scholars from Portugal, Canada and the United States will discuss current research findings on the Portuguese American immigrant experience under the topics of socioeconomic advancement, civic participation and political participation, and the issues of Portuguese language maintenance and ethnic boundaries.

Meredith Vieira, former host of NBC’s Today Show will be the keynote speaker with a presentation titled “Discovering My Azorean Roots: A Conversation with Meredith Vieira” about her experience as an American of Azorean descent.

Dulce Soares Scott, Ph.D. will present for debate the results of her current survey and study examining new trends in the integration of Portuguese Americans of 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation and their descendants.

Launched in October, 2006, the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies is dedicated to the promotion and support of Portuguese Studies at the Rhode Island College, fostering connections between the College and Lusophone communities in the region, and pursuing scholarly research and cultural projects related to the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures.
