Honor | Portugal wins 32 awards at 2025 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition – NY, NY

Portuguese olive oil producers earned 32 awards at the 2025 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, reaffirming Portugal’s reputation as a global leader in premium extra virgin olive oil.

The NYIOOC — the world’s largest and most prestigious olive oil quality contest — honored 742 exceptional oils this year, including 517 Gold and 225 Silver Awards.

Portugal’s award-winning entries highlight the country’s excellence, tradition, and innovation, with strong representation from regions such as Alentejo, Trás-os-Montes, and Beira Interior.

Among the top Portuguese winners are Wildly Virgin (Trás-os-Montes) received a Gold Award for its high-polyphenol, robust profile; Monte Vale de Baio (Norte Alentejo) was awarded Silver for its balanced, aromatic character; and Cobrançosa Extra Virgin Olive Oil, known for its fruity complexity and native cultivar, also claimed Gold.

“The recognition at NYIOOC underscores the excellence and diversity of Portuguese olive oil,” said a spokesperson from Casa do Azeite, Portugal’s olive oil association. “Our producers continue to raise the standard with authentic, award-winning oils that reflect the richness of our land.”

Portugal’s olive oil sector blends millennia-old traditions with modern, sustainable practices. Many producers employ organic or low-intervention methods, increasingly focused on environmental stewardship.

Portugal’s prominence is further strengthened by its EU-protected designations of origin (PDO), including Azeite de Trás-os-Montes DOP, Azeite do Alentejo Interior DOP, and Azeite de Moura DOP — each reflecting the unique terroir of their regions. From the sun-drenched plains of Alentejo to the rugged terrain of Trás-os-Montes, Portugal’s diverse microclimates provide ideal conditions for olive cultivation.

Portuguese olive oils continue to earn accolades at major global contests such as the NYIOOC, Mario Solinas Awards, and Olive Japan, driving international demand. Leading brands like Gallo, Oliveira da Serra, Casa Anadia, and Esporão are now found worldwide, from gourmet shops to major retailers.

Award-winning oils from the NYIOOC are featured in the Official Index of the World’s Best Olive Oils, giving producers prestige and greater access to global markets.

Portugal: A Rising Power in Olive Oil Production

Portugal’s haul of 32 awards underscores its reputation as one of the world’s leading olive oil producers. Portugal is one of the world’s largest olive oil producers, and its output has grown significantly in recent years. As of 2024, the country ranks as the 7th largest producer globally, typically following Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Tunisia — but ahead of many others.

In the 2021/2022 season, Portugal reached record production levels, surpassing 200,000 metric tons. This growth is largely attributed to modernized agricultural practices, especially in the Alentejo region, which now accounts for more than 70% of national production. The region’s large-scale groves and advanced mills have made it a hub of efficiency and innovation.

Portugal distinguishes itself by combining industrial efficiency with a reputation for high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Portuguese oils consistently win top prizes at international competitions, solidifying the country’s place among elite producers.

Strong Export Growth
More than 50% of Portuguese olive oil is now exported to over 100 countries. Key markets include Brazil, the United States, France, Spain, and China, reflecting the global demand for Portugal’s award-winning oils.
