Honor | Évora named European Capital of Culture for 2027 – Portugal

Évora city in Portugal’s Alentejo region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2027, marking the fourth time a Portuguese city has received this honor.

Chosen from a shortlist that included Aveiro, Braga, and Ponta Delgada, Évora was praised for its strong regional identity, cultural depth, and innovative programming concept.

Each year, one or more cities from EU member states or eligible candidate countries are designated to host a year-long program of cultural events with a strong European dimension. Évora will be European Capital of Culture 2027 jointly with Liepaja, Latvia.

The core theme of Évora 2027 is “Vagar”, a Portuguese term reflecting the art of slow living, time for reflection, and mindful presence. This concept shapes the entire cultural program as a response to contemporary European challenges such as environmental crisis, urban disconnection, and social fragmentation.

The cultural calendar for 2027 will extend for more than a one-year celebration, featuring a wide array of performances, exhibitions, festivals, and participatory events, both in Évora and throughout the wider Alentejo region.

Established in 1985, the European Capital of Culture initiative is one of the most prominent cultural programs of the European Union, to celebrate the richness and diversity of European cultures.

The initiative emphasizes not only artistic excellence but also the capacity of culture to drive regeneration, promote social cohesion, and stimulate the creative economy. A rigorous selection process and ongoing monitoring ensure that chosen cities develop sustainable cultural strategies with lasting impact.

Past Portuguese titleholders include Lisbon (1994), Porto (2001), and Guimarães (2012). The program is coordinated by the European Commission and operates under specific EU regulations. By 2027, more than 60 European cities will have held the title. More @ Évora 2027
