Heritage | Portugal one of the most peaceful nations – Global Peace Index

Portugal has once again been recognized as one of the safest and most peaceful nations on the planet, ranking 7th globally in the latest Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

Portugal has consistently ranked among the world’s safest destinations for residents, visitors, and investors alike. The country previously reached as high as 2nd place in 2017 and has remained a benchmark for peaceful living since first breaking into the top 10 in 2015.

The annual report evaluates 163 countries and territories based on factors including societal safety and security, levels of domestic and international conflict, and militarization. Portugal maintained its position among the world’s top-performing nations, ahead of many larger and more economically powerful countries.

According to the 2025 Global Peace Index rankings, the world’s ten most peaceful countries are Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia, and Finland. Portugal’s continued presence among the global leaders reflects its political stability, low levels of violent crime, strong democratic institutions, and commitment to international cooperation.

Portugal’s high standing in the Global Peace Index further strengthens its international reputation as a secure and welcoming nation. The ranking comes as global peacefulness continues to face challenges from armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and rising insecurity in many regions.

Launched in 2007, the Global Peace Index is the world’s leading measure of national peacefulness, developed in collaboration with peace experts and institutions worldwide. It uses data from sources including the Economist Intelligence Unit and the United Nations.
