
The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), based in Lisbon, Portugal, is offering short-term research grants for 2025.
Open to students, teachers, and researchers from colleges, universities and research centers in the United States, grants are provided in collaboration with Direção-Geral do Livro, Arquivos e Bibliotecas – Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (DGLAB-ANTT)
Aimed to promote the Portuguese language and culture. the fellowships support research projects in archival sciences, history, or Portuguese culture and language in the National Archive of Torre do Tombo.
Torre do Tombo National Archive, commonly known as the Torre do Tombo, is Portugal’s national archive in Lisbon. One of the oldest archival institutions in the world and one of the most significant archives in Europe, Torre do Tombo holds precious documents dating back to the 9th century.
Grants last between one and three months, starting no later than December 2025. Recipients receive €1,400 per month, plus €750 for travel expenses.
Applicants must submit a completed application form, CV, biographical note, study plan, university affiliation proof, and relevant credentials. Applications in Portuguese must be submitted by March 31, 2025. Results will be announced by April 30, 2025.
In addition to the Torre de Tombo fellowship, there are other research grant opportunities including within the Biblioteca Nacional, in Lisbon, and grants for any archive/library, public or private, anywhere in the country. A jury evaluates the quality of the proposals and verifies the research topic is original. Applicants must be fluent in Portuguese to conduct the research.
