Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro will travel to New York from September 22 to 24 to represent Portugal at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
On Thursday, September 24, Montenegro is expected to deliver Portugal’s national address to the Assembly at approximately 2:15 p.m. New York time.
The theme for this year’s session is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The event will bring together heads of state and government from many countries.
On Tuesday, September 22, Montenegro is scheduled to visit the New York Stock Exchange, meet NYSE President Lynn Martin, deliver remarks and participate in the closing-bell ceremony. He will then attend the inauguration of Joalharia do Carmo Portuguese Filigree in Times Square, showcasing Portuguese craftsmanship.
Montenegro is also scheduled to attend a reception by President Donald Trump for heads of delegation participating in the General Assembly. The annual event will include speeches from President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron.
On Wednesday, September 23, Montenegro is scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters at 9:30 a.m. He will subsequently participate in the high-level launch of the OceanEye Alliance and in the UN Secretary-General’s high-level event on Climate Action and the Just Transition.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s address at this year’s UN General Assembly will provide Portugal with a platform to present the country’s positions on major international issues. The United States is Portugal’s fourth-largest market, with Portuguese goods exports to the U.S. valued at approximately US$5.18 billion in 2025.
The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is the last presided over by António Guterres as UN Secretary-General. He completes his second and final term on December 31, 2026. Guterres, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, has led the United Nations since January 2017.
