US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued an official statement on June 10, 2026, marking Portugal Day, officially known as “Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas” (Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities).
In his message, Secretary Rubio emphasized the historic friendship between the two countries, highlighting shared democratic values, economic cooperation, and the strong partnership within NATO.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend congratulations to the Portuguese people as you celebrate the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities,” Rubio stated.
The Secretary of State also praised the role of Portuguese-Americans in enriching communities throughout the United States through their cultural heritage, civic engagement, and contributions across multiple sectors.
“The United States and Portugal share a friendship rooted in centuries of history and strengthened by our common democratic values, economic ties, and security cooperation,” Rubio said. “We also recognize the invaluable contributions of Portuguese Americans, whose culture, heritage, and achievements enrich communities across the United States.”
Celebrations are taking place throughout Portugal and in Portuguese diaspora communities across the United States, Canada, Brazil, Luxembourg, and other countries with significant Portuguese populations.
The United States and Portugal maintain close diplomatic, economic, military, and cultural relations, including cooperation through NATO and longstanding ties between American and Portuguese communities, particularly in states such as Rhode Island, Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, and Hawaii.
Portugal Day, celebrated annually on June 10 , commemorates the legacy of Portugal’s sixteenth-century poet, Luís de Camões, and recognizes the enduring cultural, economic, and social contributions of Portuguese communities around the world.
