The Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Emídio Sousa, has expressed his intention to foster the creation of an economic community that connects Portuguese citizens and their descendants worldwide, aiming to strengthen ties between the diaspora and Portugal’s economy.

His proposal centers on leveraging the global Portuguese diaspora, estimated at more than five million people, as a strategic economic network. The plan also aligns with broader efforts to internationalize its economy and support diaspora engagement through diplomatic and consular channels. 

The initiative envisions facilitating closer collaboration among entrepreneurs, investors, and professionals of Portuguese descent, particularly in key countries such as the United States, Brazil, Canada, and across Europe. 

“We want to organize that potential into a true economic community, capable of generating investment, innovation, and shared prosperity between Portugal and its diaspora.” Emidio Sousa said.

While still in early stages, the concept could include business forums, digital platforms, and incentive programs designed to connect Portuguese-owned enterprises abroad with opportunities in Portugal.

Speaking on the initiative, “The Portuguese communities abroad are not only a cultural extension of our country. They are a powerful economic force,” Sousa said, emphasizing the untapped potential of global Portuguese networks.

While still in development, the initiative is expected to include business forums, digital platforms, and targeted incentives to foster partnerships across sectors such as technology, tourism, and renewable energy.
