Community: Meet celebrity Chef Maria Lawton – UMass Dartmouth

The University of Massachusetts’ Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture and Tagus Press announced that Maria Lawton, the host and executive producer of the award-winning PBS series Maria’s Portuguese Table, will be giving a presentation at UMass. The event will take place on Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 2-5 pm in the Grand Reading Room of the Claire T Carney Library.

During the presentation, Maria Lawton will discuss the creative process behind her show, which highlights the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural heritage through gastronomy. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. Guests are advised to park in lots 13 and 14.

Dr. Paula C. G. Noversa, Director of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, said, “Maria Lawton is a local gem! This is a wonderful opportunity to meet her and not only learn about Portuguese cooking traditions but also learn about how she turned her passion for Portuguese cuisine into an award-winning television program.”

Maria Lawton, born and raised in the Azores, Portugal, emigrated to the United States at the age of six, where her passion for the vibrant culinary heritage of her homeland grew. Her journey in the culinary world started as a home cook, where she passionately recreated her family’s traditional Portuguese recipes.

Her talent for preparing authentic, delicious dishes led her to be known as the “Azorean Greenbean.” She authored the popular and best-selling cookbook Azorean Cooking: From My Family Table to Yours, which became a cornerstone in preserving and promoting Azorean cuisine.

In 2019, Maria launched the highly acclaimed television series Maria’s Portuguese Table on Rhode Island PBS. In 2020, the series was picked up for nationwide distribution through PBS. The show has received numerous awards, including a TASTE Award for Best Ethnic Lifestyle Series, a Telly Award in both Silver and Bronze for Best Food & Travel Series on PBS, as well as an Emmy Nomination. The series showcases Maria’s unique ability to explore the diverse regional cuisines, rich history, and vibrant culture of Portugal while connecting with local chefs, artisans, and families who share her passion for Portuguese food. Maria Lawton’s dedication to her culinary heritage has not only made her a beloved figure among the Portuguese-American community but also established her as a culinary ambassador, helping to raise the profile of Portuguese cuisine worldwide. Through her work, Maria continues to inspire and educate others about the importance of preserving culinary traditions and embracing the diverse flavors of Portugal.
