FLAD | Essay Competition for Young Portuguese-Americans – Portugal

The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) has launched a new essay competition inviting young Americans of Portuguese descent to reflect on the enduring relationship between Portugal and the United States.

Announced to coincide with the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, the initiative encourages a new generation of Portuguese-Americans to explore the historical, cultural, political, and human ties that have connected the two countries for more than two centuries.

The contest is open to U.S. citizens of Portuguese descent between the ages of 18 and 23. Participants are asked to submit an original, unpublished essay in English of up to 3,500 characters (including spaces), examining any aspect of the Portugal–U.S. relationship, including the significance of the United States’ 250th anniversary.

According to FLAD, the competition aims to strengthen awareness of the shared history between the two nations while encouraging young Portuguese-Americans to contribute their own perspectives on the future of this longstanding transatlantic partnership.

Three winners will be selected. The first-place recipient will receive a $2,000 prize and have the winning essay published in a Portuguese-American media outlet, while two runners-up will each receive $1,000. For information regarding application guidelines, visit www.flad.pt

Applications are being accepted through September 20, 2026, and candidates must submit both their essay and résumé via FLAD’s online application system.

The competition is part of FLAD’s broader mission to strengthen educational, cultural, and civic connections between Portugal and the United States and to foster engagement among emerging Portuguese-American leaders.

The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD),  established on May 20, 1985, acts as a transatlantic bridge between the United States and Portugal, promoting academic exchange, scientific collaboration, cultural enrichment, and bilateral dialogue. It operates through grants, fellowships, programs, and large-scale projects, playing a pivotal role in promoting the Portugal-US relationship.
