The Azores are hosting the ‘4th Franklin D. Roosevelt Azorean Forum’ taking place April 9-10, at the Lajes do Pico Whaling Museum, Pico island.
The Forum is co-sponsored by the Government of the Azores and the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD).
Launched in 2008, the biennial event will address pressing issues relating to the transatlantic relations between Europe and the United States in the context of the geographical location of the Azores.
The Forum, inspired by the role played by President Roosevelt in 20th century international relations, will bring together politicians and academics from both sides of the Atlantic.
The first Franklin D. Roosevelt Azorean Forum was held in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, in 2008; the second Forum took place in Angra do Heroismo, Terceira, in 2010; the third Forum took place in Horta, Faial, in 2012.
Based in Lisbon, Portugal, the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) is a grant making organization dedicated to funding initiatives to promote scientific and cultural exchanges between Portugal and the United States.

The Azores (population 250,000) is a region of Portugal composed of nine islands. The archipelago discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century, became an Autonomous Region of Portugal in 1976. The government of the Autonomous Region of the Azores includes the Legislative Assembly, composed of 57 elected deputies, elected by universal suffrage for a four-year term; the Regional Government and Presidency, with parliamentary legitimacy, composed of a President, a Vice-President and seven Regional Secretaries responsible for the Regional Government executive operations. The Autonomous Region of the Azores is represented in the Council of Ministers of the Central Government by a representative appointed by the President of Portugal. According to the latest US census over 1.3 million individuals of Portuguese descent live in the United States, the majority with roots in the Azores. It is estimated that over 20,000 US citizens live in Portugal.
