Pope Leo XIV has expressed his “deep sorrow” and spiritual closeness to the people of Portugal following the devastation caused by Storm Kristin, which struck several regions of the country in recent days, causing widespread destruction, especially in the Central regions, including Leiria and Coimbra.
In a telegram addressed to D. José Ornelas, President of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, the Holy Father conveyed his sympathy to the families of the victims and to all those affected by the storm.
“The Holy Father learned with sadness of the consequences of the violent storm that has struck the country,” the message reads, adding that he feels “very close to all those who are suffering, especially the families who mourn the loss of loved ones.”
The Pope’s message, delivered on behalf of the Vatican by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, emphasized his prayers for the victims and their families, and invoked the apostolic blessing for all those suffering in the aftermath of the storm.
He also acknowledged and praised the efforts of civil and church authorities, emergency personnel, and volunteers assisting with rescue and relief efforts.
The Pope assured his prayers for the injured, the displaced, and those facing material losses, stating that he “entrusts the victims to the merciful love of God” and asks that “comfort, hope, and strength be granted to all who are enduring this time of trial.”
Storm Kristin, which caused five fatalities, was one of the most severe storms to hit mainland Portugal in recent years, bringing strong winds, heavy rains, and significant damage to infrastructure, utilities, and homes, prompting national emergency responses and a declaration of calamity in the worst-hit areas.
With about 80 % of the population identifying as Catholic, roughly 7 million people, Catholicism remains a central element of Portugal’s cultural and historical identity. Although Portugal is a secular and plural society, the Catholic Church continues to play an important role in community life, social solidarity, and national moments of reflection and celebration.
