Portugal was voted first in the world’s list of top 10 best hostels selection, securing the top five spots, at the the annual 10th Hostelworld.com Hoscar Awards.
Traveller’s House in Lisbon, Portugal, became the first hostel ever to win first place two years in a row. The other top Portuguese hostels selected were Rossio Hostel (Lisbon), Living Lounge Hostel (Lisbon), and Lisboa Central Hostel.
The awards recognise hostels around the world for their high standards, with more than 25,000 properties eligible in 180 countries.
Over 900,000 customers voted for the hostels online. The winners are chosen based on their overall score in six categories – fun, cleanliness, staff, security, location and character, and were voted for by over 1 million Hostelworld.com customers who booked their accommodation online and stayed in the properties in 2010.
Hostelworld.com’s Hoscars are the only awards in the travel industry decided exclusively by guest appraisals.
“I am very proud – proud for our hostel, proud for our team, and proud for the city and all the Portuguese people. It’s been a good couple of years and it’s always good to be recognised in this way – it’s an honour,” said João Pires from Traveller’s House.
Other countries included in the top list were Italy, Hungary, Wales, Poland and Latvia.
