The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has announced its Gulbenkian Research Scholarships on Portuguese Culture for Foreigners, supporting international scholars who wish to conduct research in Portugal in the fields of history, literature, and art history, interested in promoting the global study of Portuguese culture.
The scholarship program is open to non-Portuguese nationals residing abroad, designed to support research projects that can result in scientific articles, academic theses, or other publications. The funding includes a monthly stipend for doctoral and senior researchers, plus a travel and installation allowance, for stays in Portugal lasting 2 to 10 months.
Headquartered in Lisbon and established in 1956 under the will of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, an Armenian-born philanthropist and world-renowned art collector, the Foundation’s mission is to contribute to the “benefit of humanity” by advancing arts, science, education, and social welfare. Its cultural presence includes the prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, modern art programming, and major archives — institutions that strengthen Portugal’s cultural leadership while engaging global audiences.
With international outreach supported by delegations in London and Paris, the Foundation’s global philanthropic mission also extends to Portuguese-speaking regions and Armenian communities worldwide, reinforcing its position as a driver of cultural and scientific collaboration across the world.
