Gaza | Portuguese activists Mariana Mortágua and Sofia Aparício detained by Israeli authorities – Portugal

The Portuguese government has confirmed that Mariana Mortágua, a Member of Parliament and coordinator of the Left Bloc (Bloco de Esquerda), and Sofia Aparício, a well-known Portuguese model and actress, were detained today by Israeli forces during the interception of the humanitarian flotilla was bound for Gaza.

Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg, was also. detained. Other activists on multiple flotilla vessels are also being detained as the Israeli navy boards several ships.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry statement indicated that passengers from intercepted vessels are being “safely stopped” and transferred to the Israeli port of Ashdod for processing. 

According to official statements, the flotilla — which included international activists, humanitarian workers, and public figures — was attempting to deliver aid and draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Israeli naval forces intercepted the vessels in the Mediterranean and transferred the passengers to Israeli territory for identification and processing. Among those on board were Mortágua and Aparício, who joined the initiative in solidarity with Palestinians and to advocate for humanitarian access.

The Presidency of the Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed that Portuguese consular authorities are in contact with Israeli counterparts to ensure the safety and legal rights of the detained citizens.

“The Government of Portugal is closely monitoring the situation and providing all necessary assistance to our nationals,” the Ministry stated.

Mariana Mortágua, a leading figure of the Portuguese Left Bloc party, has long been vocal on human rights and international solidarity issues. Sofia Aparício, one of Portugal’s most recognized cultural figures, has been involved in numerous humanitarian and social causes.

Their participation in the flotilla was framed as an act of peaceful protest against the blockade of Gaza and a call for international action to guarantee humanitarian relief.
