About the Author
Maria Lawton, widely known as the “Azorean Green Bean,” is a Portuguese-American author and culinary ambassador whose work celebrates the flavors and traditions of her Azorean heritage. Born in São Miguel and raised in the United States, she gained national recognition with her cookbook Azorean Cooking: From My Table to Yours, which preserves family recipes passed down through generations. Lawton also hosts the popular public television PBS series Maria’s Portuguese Table, introducing audiences to the food, culture, and landscapes of Portugal and its diaspora. Through her storytelling, advocacy, and passion for authentic cuisine, she has become a beloved voice connecting the Portuguese diaspora with its heritage.
