Today, June 24th, Congressmen David Valadao (CA-22) and Jim Costa (CA-21), co-chairs of the Portuguese-American Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, reintroduced a bipartisan resolution formally recognizing June as Portuguese National Heritage Month.
The measure honors the rich history, culture, and enduring contributions of the more than 1.4 million Americans of Portuguese ancestry, while recognizing the longstanding friendship between the United States and Portugal.
“Like many Portuguese Americans, my parents came to the United States from the Azores Islands of Portugal in pursuit of the American Dream and greater opportunities for their children. That same determination has inspired generations of Portuguese Americans to make lasting contributions to our communities here in the Central Valley and across the nation. As co-chair of the Congressional Portuguese Caucus, I’m honored to recognize the impact of the Portuguese American community by formally designating June as Portuguese National Heritage Month,” said David Valadao.
The resolution acknowledges the significant role Portuguese Americans have played in shaping the United States since the earliest days of immigration, with generations contributing to agriculture, fishing, maritime industries, business, education, public service, the military, science, arts, and culture.
“I’m honored to represent a community with deep Portuguese roots. As the grandson of Portuguese immigrants, I have seen firsthand the values of hard work, family, and perseverance that have shaped generations of Portuguese Americans. As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we recognize the lasting contributions Portuguese Americans have made to the San Joaquin Valley and our nation, as well as the enduring friendship between the United States and Portugal,” said Jim Costa.
It also recognizes the vibrant Portuguese-American communities found across the country, particularly the states of California, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Florida, where Portuguese heritage continues to be celebrated through cultural organizations, festivals, and educational initiatives.
The reintroduction of the resolution comes during nationwide Portugal Day celebrations, observed annually on June 10 as the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. If adopted, the resolution will commemorate Portuguese National Heritage Month through educational, cultural, and civic activities that celebrate the enduring legacy of Portuguese Americans and their contributions to the nation’s history and prosperity.
Established in 1995, the Portuguese-American Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives is co-chaired by two representatives, one from each party. Its purpose is to advocate for issues that are important to the Portuguese-American community, such as promoting cultural exchange and economic cooperation, and strengthening the bilateral relationship between the United States and Portugal.
