A nationwide general strike is expected to cause major disruptions at airports across Portugal on June 3, 2026, with more than 500 flights potentially affected or canceled.
Airport authorities and airlines are warning travelers that disruptions may extend beyond the strike day itself, affecting flights on June 2 and June 4 as aircraft and crews are repositioned.
For travelers heading to Portugal, Madeira, or the Azores, airlines are advising passengers to monitor flight status updates closely and confirm schedules before departing for the airport.
The strike involves airport workers, airline cabin crews, and transportation employees, and it is expected to impact the country’s busiest aviation hubs, including Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport, Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, Faro Airport in the Algarve, Madeira Airport in Funchal, and João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada, Azores.
Portuguese carrier TAP Air Portugal is reportedly preparing to cancel up to 300 flights. Operations involving Azores Airlines, SATA Air Açores, Ryanair, easyJet, and other carriers are also expected to face disruptions.
Ground transportation to and from airports, including metro systems, buses, trains, ferries, and other public transit services, is also expected to be affected, particularly in Lisbon and Porto.
The walkout has been called by Portugal’s largest trade union confederation, CGTP, together with sector-specific unions, following months of disputes over the government’s proposed labor reforms known as Trabalho XXI.
The expected disruptions, which could affect international travel, are especially significant for routes connecting the Portuguese mainland with the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, including Ponta Delgada, one of the country’s busiest island gateways and the principal hub of the SATA Group.
Under European passenger-rights regulations, travelers whose flights are canceled are generally entitled to rebooking or refunds, although additional compensation may depend on the specific circumstances of the strike.
