Honor | President Cavaco Silva recipient of the European Order of Merit – Strasbourg, France

Former Portuguese Prime Minister and President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, 87, has been named among the inaugural recipients of the newly established European Order of Merit, the President of the European Parliament announced in Strasbourg.

The distinction, created to honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions to European integration, democracy, and shared values, recognizes a select group of leaders whose work has shaped the European project across political, economic, and cultural spheres.

In announcing the laureates, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, emphasized the symbolic importance of the award, stating, “The European Order of Merit recognizes individuals whose leadership, vision, and commitment have strengthened the foundations of our Union. At a time of global uncertainty, it is essential to honor those who have advanced unity, solidarity, and the European ideal.”

Cavaco Silva, who served as Portugal’s Prime Minister (1985-1995) and later as President of the Republic (2006-2016), was recognized for his pivotal role in consolidating Portugal’s place within the European Union and advancing economic modernization during a critical period of integration.

In a statement following the announcement, Cavaco Silva expressed gratitude for the recognition, remarking, “I receive this distinction with deep honor and humility. Portugal’s path within Europe has been a collective achievement, built on the resilience and aspirations of the Portuguese people. This recognition belongs not only to me, but to all those who contributed to strengthening our country’s place in the European project.”

Throughout his political career, Aníbal Cavaco Silva has been widely regarded as a key architect of Portugal’s economic growth and European alignment in the late 20th century. His leadership helped guide the country through transformative years marked by EU funding, modernization, and increased global integration.

The European Order of Merit is expected to become one of the European Union’s most prestigious recognitions, highlighting individuals whose contributions continue to shape the future of Europe.
