Election’26 | Diaspora vote count shows strong support for André Ventura – Portugal

Portugal’s presidential runoff election provisional vote count indicates that Chega candidate André Ventura secured the largest share of votes cast by Portuguese citizens living abroad.

As final counts are still being compiled from abroad, Ventura has received approximately 51.88% of the diaspora vote, compared with 48.12% for Seguro.

These figures reflect global voting and remain subject to confirmation until final tabulations are completed. Meanwhile, socialist António José Seguro was elected President of Portugal, with about 66–67% of the vote against populist Chega candidate André Ventura with about 33–34%, according to near-final ballots counted.

Even though António José Seguro won the presidency decisively, the Portuguese diaspora’s preference for far-right populist André Ventura highlights once again the political distinctiveness of the expatriate electorate, sharply contrasting with the domestic result, where Seguro captured roughly two-thirds of the national vote and defeated Ventura comfortably in the second round.

Seguro led among emigrant voters in several European countries, including Spain, Germany, and Russia, while Ventura’s broader support across other regions contributed to his popularity abroad. In Brazil, one of the largest overseas electorates, Ventura reportedly secured nearly 59% of ballots cast.

In the United States, where the official consulate results have not yet been published, attention has centered on logistical challenges that may have affected turnout, such as reported long travel distances to polling sites and limited voting locations.

At the time of reporting, the emerging pattern reinforces the diaspora’s continuing role as a politically influential, distinct constituency within Portuguese electoral politics.
