Portugal’s Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Emídio Sousa, has begun a week-long official visit to the East Coast of the United States.
The visit is designed to reinforce ties with Portuguese-American communities, strengthen collaboration with local institutions, and highlight the Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting Portuguese citizens and descendants living abroad.
“This visit is an opportunity to listen directly to our emigrants, understand their needs, and work together on policies that reflect their importance to Portugal,” he said.
Secretary Sousa’s itinerary includes stops in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey, with meetings planned alongside community leaders, Portuguese-American elected officials, cultural associations, and consular services.
Addressing one of his key priorities, he remarked, “Our goal is to strengthen the presence of Portuguese language and culture within families and schools. Heritage language retention is not only cultural—it is strategic for Portugal’s global future.”
Throughout the week, Secretary Sousa will participate in community forums, consulate briefings, school visits, cultural events, and meetings with local authorities. Key themes to be addressed include improved services for Portuguese nationals, civic participation among younger generations, funding for cultural and educational programs, and deeper engagement with Portuguese-American institutions and foundations.
Before joining his post, Secretary Emídio Sousa was the long-standing Mayor of Santa Maria da Feira (2013-2024), where his work focused on economic development, cultural revitalization, and international partnerships. With a background in public administration, he has been active in promoting regional investment and strengthening ties with the Portuguese diaspora.
