Technology | Google to build submarine cable facility in Lagoa – Azores

Google has confirmed it will establish a major telecommunications infrastructure facility at the Tecnoparque da Lagoa, on the island of São Miguel in the Azores.

The new development will house a cable landing station (CLS) to serve as a key connection point for Google’s next-generation transatlantic submarine cables, Nuvem and Sol, which are designed to enhance global internet speed, redundancy, and resilience.

The building, located on Lot 32B of the science and technology park, will cover approximately 15,000 m² and position the Azores as a vital mid-Atlantic node in Google’s global data network.

Unlike traditional office spaces, the Lagoa facility will focus on housing critical network equipment and technical infrastructure. As such, immediate staffing needs will center around construction, cable installation, systems integration, and later, ongoing technical maintenance and operations.

While Google has not announced direct hiring initiatives in the Azores at this time, regional leaders anticipate that local professionals in fields such as marine engineering, network systems, and logistics could benefit from the project in both the short and long term. Indirect job creation in the region through construction and service partnerships is also expected.

This project reflects the Azores’ strategic geographic position between Europe and North America. The landing of the Nuvem and Sol cables in São Miguel will not only enhance digital connectivity across the Atlantic but may also attract future investments in technology and data infrastructure.

Local officials in Lagoa and the regional government have expressed optimism about the potential for future partnerships with educational institutions and job training programs tied to the tech sector. Interested individuals are encouraged to monitor Google’s careers portal and regional job announcements as the project progresses.

The Azores (population 250,000) is a region of Portugal composed of nine islands. The archipelago, discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century, became an Autonomous Region of Portugal in 1976. The government of the Autonomous Region of the Azores includes the Legislative Assembly, composed of 57 elected deputies, elected by universal suffrage for a four-year term; the Regional Government and Presidency, with parliamentary legitimacy, composed of a President, a Vice-President and seven Regional Secretaries responsible for the Regional Government’s executive operations. The Autonomous Region of the Azores is represented in the Council of Ministers of the Central Government by a representative appointed by the President of Portugal. According to the latest US census, over 1.3 million individuals of Portuguese descent live in the United States, the majority with roots in the Azores. It is estimated that over 20,000 US citizens live in Portugal.
