Museum of Contemporary Art underway – Ponta Delgada

The project to build the new Museum of Contemporary Art in Ponta Delgada, Azores, is well underway in partnership with Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The project will connect the Autonomous Region with the ‘Paths Niemeyer’ worldwide.

The project was worked out in Brazil between Ponta Delgada’s Mayor, Berta Cabral, and the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer who, according to Berta Cabral, “is the greatest living architect in the world.”

The future museum, with a total area of 4,000 square meters, is according to Berta Cabral “itself a work of art,” and will provide “touristic, cultural and economic” advantages to the largest city of the Azores, “which will  be better known for having a work of Niemeyer,” she said.

“The final project must be completed within six months,” said Berta Cabral, estimating that the construction work will start in 2012. Estimated at US$ 800,000, the new museum will be built in the Avenida do Mar area. European funds will pick up 85 percent of the total costs.
