The Bermuda Professional Photography Association presented photojournalist Tony Cordeiro, 73, with the lifetime achievement AFL Prisma Award for a 40 year a career in photography and digital media.
Born in Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, Azores, Cordeiro was a photojournalist at Bermuda Press Holdings for the majority of his career.
Cordeiro immigrated to Bermuda as small child with his family to reunite with his father who had already been living in Bermuda for seven years.
Retired in 2004, he took photographs for Bermuda The Royal Gazette for more than 30 years. A career highlight for Tony was going back to the Azores with former Premier of Bermuda, Sir David Gibbons, and Lady Gibbons on an official visit to enhance Bermuda’s long cultural ties with his homeland.
He was the first recipient of the award launched by AFL Investments in partnership with the Bermuda Professional Photographic Association (BPPA).
Graeme Outerbridge of the BPPA said, “We selected Tony as the debut winner for the AFL Prism Award as he stands as the archetype photographer that we were looking to formally recognize through the creation of this award,” and that “Throughout his photojournalistic career, Tony demonstrated true mastery in the medium worthy of celebrating. In talking to Tony’s former colleagues and associates during our preparations for the presentation, it was clear the high level of respect that he commands both professionally and personally.”
Cindy Campbell, Chief Operating Officer of AFL Investments said “I would like to congratulate Tony on this tremendous achievement; he will now stand as an example for other photographers to emulate.”
The Bermuda Professional Photographic Association recognizes the lifetime achievements of truly brilliant photographers in Bermuda. The annual AFL Prism Award is designed to celebrate an individual for his or her artistry in the mediums of photography and digital media.
A special AFL Prism Award website was launched to showcase Mr. Cordeiro’s photographic career and works.
