Portuguese diplomat mediates Libyan conflict – Portugal

An unidentified Libyan envoy met with Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado, March 9 “to explain Tripoli’s view on the conflict in the country,” Al Jazeera reported.

Libya has requested the meeting with Portugal, which chairs the United Nations Security Council’s committee on sanctions for Libya.

According to the Portuguese press the Lybian regime was willing to launch negotiations for a transition of power and that Gadhafi could be looking for a country to go into exile.

The Portuguese news agency Lusa, revealed that a Maltese official said Libyan emissaries had arrived on the Mediterranean island on Wednesday for talks with Maltese officials, and then flown to Portugal. A source in Brussels said the plane was carrying a moderate member of Gaddafi’s government for a meeting with Amado.
