The National Organization of Portuguese Americans (NOPA), which has been advocating for the continuation of the Congressional Portuguese American Caucus, reported today that the Caucus has been reinstated for the present 114 th US Congress.
The Caucus, established in 1995 by Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (RI-D) and co-chaired with Congressman Richard Pombo (CA-R), is a bipartisan group of legislators dedicated to strengthening the long-standing bilateral ties between the United States and Portugal and to the issues facing the Portuguese American community.
On its website, NOPA stated that over the next month, it will work with the Caucus’ Co-Chairs’ Congressional staff outreach to Members of Congress, inviting them to join the Caucus. Accordingly, NOPA urges all individuals and organizations in the Portuguese American community to reach out to your Members and ask them to join the Caucus.
In addition, NOPA appeals to the Portuguese American community to “to call and/or email the caucus co-chairs, Congressmen Jim Costa (D-CA), David G. Valadao (R-CA), David N. Cicilline (D-RI), and Lee Zeldin (R-NY) especially if you are one of their constituents, to thank them for co-chairing the caucus and for their commitment to the Portuguese-American community.”
“Over the next month, NOPA will work with the Caucus’ Co-Chairs’ Congressional staff outreach to Members of Congress, inviting them to join the caucus, and NOPA urges all individuals and organizations in the Portuguese American community to reach out to your Members and ask them to join the caucus,” NOPA stated.
Established in 2009, NOPA is a national non-profit organization that empowers United States citizens and residents of Portuguese descent through advocacy, civic engagement, community development, education, and grassroots support. NOPA also serves to facilitate a positive relationship between Portugal and the United States.
