Sogrape Wines was elected the Portuguese winemaker of the year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).
The IWSC sends over 250 specialists traveling all over the world to judge wine producers. This year Sogrape wines won 28 of the 29 possible medals. The competition culminated in London, November 16th, with the annual awards presentation ceremony.
In addition to the Sogrape winemaker trophy, the company won the Trophy for Port with Port Wine Sandeman 20 Years Old Tawny.
Founded in 1942, Sogrape Wines is the largest wine producer in Portugal. Its first product was the rosé wine Mateus. Some brands from Sogrape Wines include Casa Ferreirinha, Gazela Vinho Verde, Offley Vinho do Porto, Sandeman “Apitiy”, Ferreira Vintage and Mateus Aragonez Rose.
Sogrape holdings include Callabriga, Sandeman, Mateus and Quinta Azeveda in Portugal as well as Finca Flichman in Argentina, Framingham in New Zealand and Chateau Los Boldos in Chile. With a trunover of 185 million-euro, most recently Sogrape aquired UK wine merchant Stevens Garnier.
In 2010, Sogrape Wines received the “Producer of the Year” award by the American Wine Enthusiast Magazine considered the Oscar of the wine industry.
The International Wine & Spirit Competition was founded in 1969 aimed to promote the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs.
Each year the competition receives entries from over 80 countries worldwide. The IWSC awards are considered to be among the highest honors in the industry.
