GWC: Francisco Dias named performer of the week – Tennis

Freshman Francisco Dias opened his first spring season with the George Washington men’s tennis team with an impressive three victories at No. 1 singles, and was named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week on Monday.

Dias, who is currently ranked No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Atlantic Region, was the lone Colonials’ player to go undefeated in singles play this past weekend.

The Lisbon, Portugal, native opened 2012 action on Friday with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 first-flight singles victory over Old Dominion’s Krzysztof Muzalewski.

At William and Mary’s two-day Tribe Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Dias dispatched two more opponents in No. 1 singles play. On Saturday, Dias took down Michael Laser of Dartmouth with scores of 7-6, 4-6, 6-0, and on Sunday he glided to an easy 6-2, 6-3 victory over Iowa’s Will Vasos.

Dias was up one set (6-0) over William & Mary’s Anton Andersson, but the match was abandoned after the Tribe secured the team victory with Nos. 3 and 4 singles wins. Dias and sophomore Viktor Svensson teamed up in No. 2 doubles action and defeated William and Mary’s Robert Pietrucha and Ilja Orre, 8-1.

The Colonials return to the court this Saturday, Feb. 4 for a 2 p.m. match at Penn. GW then faces A-10 foes Temple at 8:30 a.m., and Saint Joseph’s at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5.
