The Portuguese Heritage Publications Inc. has announced  that the book Power of the Spirit: The Journey of English Building Faith and Churches in California was awarded second place by the 15th International Latino Book Awards (ILBA), Category Non Fiction, Multi-Author, in a ceremony held at Instituito Cervantes, in New York City.

Power of the Spirit tells the story of the Catholic Portuguese churches and its clergy in California over 150 years. The first place went to Count on Me, Las Comadres Para Las Americas (Atria Books) USA.

The Portuguese Heritage Publications, and co-authors of the book Joe Machado and Ferreira Moreno, were represented at the ceremony by José Rodrigues Couto.

For the first time, the ILBA, the largest awards in the USA celebrating achievements in Latino literature, allowed entries from Portuguese authors in either English or Portuguese language.

This year, the awards were sponsored by Libros Publishing; Scholastic; the University of Arizona Press and Arte Publico Press.

All finalist books are displayed at a BookExpo America booth, the largest publishing trade show in the USA.  The event is attended by thousands of booksellers and the display is designed to promote the sale of the winning titles.
