Azores School of Observational Cosmology – Seminar

The University of the Azores, in partnership with the Astrophysical Center at the University of Porto, is organizing the international seminar  “Azores School of Observational Cosmology” to be held from August 31 to September 6, 2011, at the auditorium of the University of Azores in the Angra do Heroísmo.

Observational cosmology is the study of the structure, the evolution and the origin of the universe through observation. The field tests the predictions of theoretical cosmology and has led to the refinement of cosmological models.

Topics to be explored include the nature of dark energy and dark matter; the statistical properties of primordial fluctuations; the possible existence of a stochastic gravitational wave background; and the fundamental constituents of nature.

This seminar will provide PhD students and young post-doctoral students with state-of-the art overviews of these key issues. In addition participants will have an opportunity to present their own work and discuss it with world experts in the field
