Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences launched – Portugal

Portuguese film producer Paulo Trancoso announced the creation of the Portuguese Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, a nonprofit professional association aimed to bringing the Portuguese film industry under one organization.

Inspired by the Academy Awards (USA), BAFTA Awards (UK), Cesar Awards (France) and the Goya’s Awards (Spain), the new organization has already 340 registered members.

Based in Lisbon, Portugal, the Portuguese Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences plans to sponsor an annual award ceremony with the goal of “dignifying the movie industry and its many professionals” said Paulo Trancoso.

The first award ceremony will be held in 2012.  According to  Paulo Trancoso,  21 movie features  and seven documentary productions will be produced, in Portuga,l in 2011.

The organizing committee includes film producers Paulo Trancoso, Fernando Vendrell, Tony Costa and Maria João Sigalho; film directors Miguel Gonçalves Mendes e António Ferreira, screen writer João Nunes; actressess Anabela Teixeira and Inês de Medeiros; and casting director Patrícia Vasconcelos.

A general meeting, scheduled for September 26, will elect the Academy’s governing bodies.
